ETF ratings

As an ETF specialist, XENIX is maintaining a unique index and ETF database since March 2009.

On this basis, XENIX has developed an original ETF rating.

The rating currently consists of over 260 criteria.

This wide range of criteria makes is possible to assess systematically the quality of each ETF.

The XENIX ETF rating system has three levels:

1. Index assessment

2. Assessment of the index fund / ETFs including the tracking difference

3. Assessment of the exchange trading and the liquidity of each ETF

ETFs are rated systematically

The performance difference (tracking difference) between index and ETF performance is included in the rating (maximum for 10 calendar years).

The rating is based on an evaluation of the prospectus of each single ETF, its life cycle and its history.

Newly launched and soon to be listed ETFs may receive on request a preliminary "Launch ETF Rating" from XENIX.

The ETF rating is updated on a quarterly basis. The monitoring of the European ETF market happens on a weekly basis.

Currently, XENIX has systematically evaluated around 1,500 ETFs listed on XETRA (as of January 2020).

XENIX plans to expand the EFT ratings in 2020 to all ETFs available in Germany and in all other European ETF markets.

The XENIX ETF rating can be extended by client-specific criteria or filters at the request of investors, asset owners and asset managers.

XENIX® STARS and XENIX® BOX

The XENIX ETF ratings offer investors a competent orientation to navigate the European ETF market.

The growth pace of new ETF launches is still enormous. More than 500 new ETFs have been launched during the last three years.

XENIX assesses and rates each ETF based on its systematic approach. As a result, investors receive a quality rating of each ETF.

The differences in the product quality are symbolized by using stars.

The best-rated ETFs can receive a five-star-rating.

The number of XENIX STARS attributed to an ETF is an indication of its quality.

We offer our clients also to use the XENIX BOX.

The XENIX BOX visualizes the nine core areas of each rating and shows the quality of an ETF in relation to its exposure group:

Index Information & Data

ETF information & data

ETF portfolio transparency
(exposure, risk & return)

ETF analytics & risk indicators

ETF performance
& replication quality

ETF reporting quality

ETF cost

ETF listings & exchange trading

ETF services & resources

"The performance contribution from dividends is mostly underestimated by investors," said Wieland Thyssen, spokesman for the management at XENIX. “With excellent global dividend ETFs, the earnings contribution from dividends can even increase to 60% of the total return.”

Four of the 13 ETFs offer an above-average product quality. These four ETFs are awarded each with four XENIX STARS ****. The winner of the XENIX ETF rating study for global dividend ETFs is the "Vanguard FTSE All-World High Dividend Yield UCITS ETF". This ETF invests in around 1,600 high-dividend stocks from around 45 countries.

The rating provider XENIX has awarded ETFs and their providers for the third time.

ETF newcomers

The first category of the XENIX ETF AWARDS is dedicated to newcomers. Some of these award-winning newcomers offer German ETF investors the opportunity to invest in previously inaccessible or previously unavailable markets. Or these newcomers offer for the first-time investments in blue chips or in the broad market for euro zone equities which are applying a sustainable ESG approach.

"In the opinion of XENIX, the eight excellent newcomer ETFs are useful additions for private and professional ETF investors," says Wieland Thyssen, spokesman for the management at XENIX. "They are the avant-garde of the approximately 200 new ETFs that were launched on the stock exchange in Germany in 2019."

Awards for best-rated ETFs

In the second category of the XENIX ETF AWARDS are high-quality ETFs honoured which are currently offering investors the best XENIX ETF rating in their market segment. The 2020 winners are given out in these four categories: DAX ETFs, broad market European equity ETFs, euro corporate bond ETFs and global dividend ETFs.

Special awards

On the occasion of the 20th birthday of the ETF market in Germany on April 11, 2020, XENIX is also awarding special awards to outstanding players who have strongly helped to develop the German ETF market since 2000. The award-winning institutions are (in alphabetical order): Börse Stuttgart, Comdirect, DAB BNP Paribas and Deutsche Börse.

XENIX ETF rating study: ETFs for the world’s bond markets

February 27, 2020

We have published the following press release for the ETF study related to the twelve global aggregate bond ETFs on XETRA:

Download

Rating provider XENIX has conducted a qualitative rating on twelve global bond ETFs available on XETRA. These ETFs track the “Bloomberg Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index”. The bond index includes mainly government, bank and corporate bonds in local currency from almost 60 industrialised and emerging countries.

Only the five ETF providers Amundi, iShares, SPDR, Xtrackers and Vanguard are currently offering Global Aggregate ETFs in Germany. They usually rely on a partial selection to replicate the index with 3,000 to 5,000 bonds, because tracking such a vast index is no easy task, especially since issuers come across the whole fixed income-spectrum.

“Eight out of the twelve ETFs on the Global Aggregate Bond Index have only been listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for around two years. On average, the twelve ETFs have only been available to German investors for two years and four months. With the XENIX ETF rating, these interest rate ETFs were facing a real quality test for the first time,” says Wieland Thyssen.
